About Victoria Falls

James Monroe is a sophisticated American professional on mission for The World Bank in Africa during the early 1990’s. Despite his worldiness, his actions betray a late twentieth century innocent abroad who embodies both the bravado and the debilitating insecurities of the modern American male.

Set in Zimbabwe, Kenya and Bombay, India, Mr. Monroe’s journey into authenticity results in a series of failed relationships that reveal the dark, enigmatic recesses of his complex personality and eventually land him in a hellhole prison in Bombay. His tragedy unfolds into an ending that no one, especially Monroe, could have possibly predicted or imagined.

In its exploration of American male stereotypes and in its suggestion of vulnerability as a key to masculine authenticity, Victoria Falls dares to embrace those humane qualities of love, kindness and creativity that have of late been extolled as the provenance of soul searching women but have been largely ignored in American fiction about men.

About Caught Up In It

The award-winning diva, C, has got a big problem: someone wants her dead. A team of mercenaries attempts to gun her down in Kuala Lumpur. Lucky for her, Lowcountry Private Investigator, Blu Carraway, is already on the job there for a different client.

Double-lucky for C, they make their move when she’s chit-chatting with him in a bar. Unlucky for the mercenaries, four of them end up dead.

The hunt is on now for the mega-pop star. Where does she go to hide out? The sleepy islands around Charleston, South Carolina—Blu’s backyard. He’s already proven himself once, so C hires the Blu Carraway Investigation Agency to protect her for real.

The job takes Blu halfway around the world and several cities in between. The search for the truth reveals what could drive a person to want someone else dead.

And Blu Carraway ends up right in the way.

About The Sacred Year

On February 10, 2018, my life as I knew it came to a screeching halt. The day before, I had rushed my husband Jim to the hospital… Ironically, at the time, I was putting the finishing touches on a book I had written about dealing with the challenges of getting older. The book, Uncharted Journey, discusses loss, letting go, and growth. Little did I know I was about to embark on my own personal uncharted journey. This is the emotional chronicle of the first year of that journey, a year that will forever be sacred.

About Mothers and Strangers: Essays on Motherhood from the New South

In this anthology of creative nonfiction, twenty-eight writers set out to discover what they know, and don’t know, about the person they call Mother. Celebrated writers Samia Serageldin and Lee Smith have curated a diverse and insightful collection that challenges stereotypes about mothers and expands our notions of motherhood in the South. The mothers in these essays were shaped, for good and bad, by the economic and political crosswinds of their time. Whether their formative experience was the Great Depression or the upheavals of the 1970s, their lives reflected their era and influenced how they raised their children. The writers in Mothers and Strangers explore the reliability of memory, examine their family dynamics, and come to terms with the past.

In addition to the editors, contributors include Lee Smith, Belle Boggs, Marshall Chapman, Hal Crowther, Clyde Edgerton, Marianne Gingher, Jaki Shelton Green, Sally Greene, Stephanie Elizondo Griest, Jacquelyn Dowd Hall, Eldridge “Redge” Hanes, Lynden Harris, Randall Kenan, Phillip Lopate, Michael Malone, Frances Mayes, Jill McCorkle, Melody Moezzi, Elaine Neil Orr, Steven Petrow, Margaret Rich, Omid Safi, James Seay, Alan Shapiro, Bland Simpson, Sharon K. Swanson, and Daniel Wallace.

South Carolina author Benjamin Gamble will be celebrating the launch of his novel, Dragons Suck, at Fiction Addiction on Wednesday, May 15th, from 5-7pm. Benjamin will be available to sign books at the event. This event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Books can be purchased online, in store, or by calling Fiction Addiction at 864-675-0540.

About Dragons Suck

Harkness, a medieval peasant with a millennial’s mindset, is quite happy to sit back and make quips while everyone else does the hard work. His calculated laziness is interrupted when the gods send an ancient and terrible scourge-by-dragonfire upon his village, and he is forced (peer-pressured, really) into trying to save his fiancée from the dragon who has kidnapped her.

When Harkness is sent by the village elder to find the one weapon that is capable of killing the beast, his real plan is to go off on his own and use his village’s money to live the high life. This, of course, would require ditching his two companions: Karla, an aspiring troubadour whose passion makes up for her lack of adventuring skills, and Aldric, whose kindheartedness does not make up for his lack of intelligence. Harkness sees this journey as a paid vacation under the pretense of worldsaving, but it quickly turns serious when he realizes what’s at stake when he is forced to actually care about something—or at the very least, pretend to.

On Saturday, July 6th, 2019, we will celebrate the underdog writers…the mavericks and the believers! Come meet these brave scribe warriors who are putting themselves out there, sometimes at their own expense, because they’ve got a story to tell.

Who is in their company?

According to Wikipedia, they’ve got some literary royalty in their ranks and some people who, while maybe not all that literary, made a boatload of money!

From Wikipedia:

“. . . well-known self-publishers include Stephen Crane, E. E. Cummings, Deepak Chopra, Benjamin Franklin, Zane Grey, Pat Ingoldsby, Rudyard Kipling, D. H. Lawrence, Thomas Paine, Edgar Allen Poe, Ezra Pound, Carl Sandburg, George Bernard Shaw, Upton Sinclair, Gertrude Stein, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, and Mark Twain.”

Author schedule:

12:15-1:15pm: Tom Baker, signing The Hawk and the Dove (paperback, $21.95)

1:30-2:30pm: Andrew Snorton, signing 9 Stories of Faith (paperback, $11.00)

Be sure to keep checking back, as some details may change as we add more authors!
